The Odyssey - a radio play by Yuri Rasovsky

A dramatization for radio in eight one-hour episodes
written and directed by Yuri Rasovsky
A National Radio Theatre presentation
Documentary production: Kerry Frumkin
Original music: Eric Salzman
Sound: Richard Fairbanks

When this groundbreaking serialized dramatization premiered on radio,
critics were unanimous in their praise, calling it "a feast for the
ears" and "a magnificent blend of scholarship and showmanship." It won
numerous honors including the George Foster Peabody Award, the Pulitzer
Prize of broadcasting. Now, twenty years after its first airing, Blackstone
Audio is pleased to present this outstanding production, dramatized
here with intermittent discussions by classical scholars.

The 2,600-year-old poem tells of a man, a hero of cunning rather than
brawn, who inhabits three worlds: the world of his own reality, the
world of the gods and demigods, and the world of magic and monsters.
The interweaving of these three worlds contributes significantly to
the delight that The Odyssey has inspired throughout the ages.

"The adaptation and writing are superb, the sound effects and music
are layered in subtly and effectively, and the fine acting humanizes
a challenging classic....The episodes have a richness that invites a
second hearing. The series is a rare and wonderful blend of storytelling,
drama, and learning."AudioFile

"This national Radio Theatre presentation by fifteen consummate actors
is unique and wonderful." KLIATT

BBC7 - A Woman of No Importance
Drama
160kbps stereo mp3

Diana Rigg, Martin Jarvis and Annette Crosby star in Oscar Wilde's tale of social scandal.
A Woman of No Importance primarily focuses on the differences between men and women and, more importantly, the way in which Victorian society treated its ladies. Wilde shows feminist leanings as he attacks the injustice of a society that condemns a "fallen" woman while admiring the cause of her downfall. A Woman of No Importance is a great reminder of how good Oscar Wilde is. He writes beautifully in both comic and (sometimes melo)dramatic mode and his main characters are memorable. A 90 minute play.

The Importance Of Being Earnest

What is the secret allure of the name Ernest? Written just over 100 years ago, Oscar Wilde's most famous play was described by its author as a trivial comedy for serious people'. It's a mixture of the usual comic ploys of mistaken identity, thwarted romance, and a happy ending, but what makes this play a classic is Wilde's epigrams, whizzing dialogue, and the monstrous character Lady Bracknell, played in this BBC production by Dame Judi Dench. With Martin Clunes and Sir Michael Hordern. A Two hour play.

Casanova - by Ian Kelly - NEW BBC Radio Audiobook - chepos

Benedict Cumberbatch reads from Ian Kelly's fascinating biography of the world's most famous lover and libertine.
Published by Hodder & Stoughton on 26 Jun 2008.
Giacomo Casanova: one of the most beguiling and controversial individuals of his or any age. Braggart or perfect lover? Conman or genius? He made and lost fortunes, founded two state lotteries, wrote various plays, philosophical and mathematical treatises, opera libretti, poetry, and forty-two books. His 3,600 pages of memoirs recorded hundreds of meals as well, of course, as his affairs and sexual encounters with dozens of women and a handful of men and have bought him two centuries of notoriety.

Now, in CASANOVA, Ian Kelly reveals previously unpublished documents by Giacomo himself, as well as his friends and lovers, which give new insights into his life and his world. From his devotion to the Kaballah to his collaboration with Mozart on his opera Don Giovanni, from his vast appetite for food and sex to his training for priesthood, this is the fascinating story of an icon of his age and ours.

Reviews:
`Ian Kelly has taken on a tremendous challenge and produced a great blast of a book, packed with energy and information, marinated in sympathy and understanding, and rippling with enthusiasm right down to the final footnote.` - Telegraph

`Where others have berated Casanova for exaggeration, inaccuracy or manifest error, Kelly extends him imaginative sympathy...he does provide a surprisingly intimate sense of what Casanova was like.` - The Times

`enthralling new biography puts us right. . . It is hard to conceive of a juicier, more informative account of social and sexual mores of 18th century Europe.` - Daily Mail

Five episodes of approximately 15 minutes each.

Episode 1:
Born into a notorious family of actors in Venice, Giacomo Casanova is never far from the stage door. His parents think the sickly, abnormally self-obsessed young boy will die young, and send him out of the city for his health. Within a few years, Casanova returns to Venice, now a tall, handsome, dashing young man, with a string of potential mistresses, and a somewhat unlikely career in the Church.

Episode 2:
When Casanova's scandalous affair with a married woman becomes the talk of Rome, he is encouraged to leave the city. Before long the unlikely cleric is embarking upon a trip to Constantinople, where the delights of the harem lead him into uncharted waters.

Episode 3:
Casanova inveigles himself into the lavish court of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour at Versailles, where he immediately gains something of a reputation. After causing something of a stir, he finds himself without income or employment. He decides to return to Venice, where an affair with an enigmatic masked nun brings him to the attention of the Venetian Inquisition.

Episode 4:
Casanova arrives in London, a city in the midst of a craze for Venetian masquerades. Using all his wit and charm, he finds himself rubbing shoulders with high society. But when he unexpectedly falls for the city's most infamous courtesan, her endless refusals drive him to distraction. He finds himself with lead weights in his pockets, contemplating the murky waters of the Thames.

Episode 5:
Hoping to try his luck at the court of Catherine the Great, Casanova accepts an invitation to a masked Venetian ball at the Winter Palace in St Petersburg. His introduction to the Tsarina proves fruitless and he moves on to Poland, where a duel boosts his reputation. But Casanova is no longer a young man, and soon he begins to reflect on his own mortality.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame - (2008) [BBC Radio (MP3 192kbps)]

Classic Serial: The Hunchback of Notre Dame 30-11-2008 - 07-11-2008

Alex Bulmer's dramatisation of Victor Hugo's novel, in which a Gypsy girl captures the heart of Quasimodo, who lives hidden away in the bell towers of Notre Dame. The tale of love, betrayal and bravery is produced in a collaboration between BBC Radio Drama and Graeae, a disabled-led theatre company.

From The Radio Times

The 1939 film version of Victor Hugo's gothic tale of love and betrayal turned deformed, deaf bell-ringer Quasimodo (played by Charles Laughton) into something of an iconic figure, mainly because of his misshapen appearance. However, this unusually faithful collaboration - between Radio 4 and disabled-led theatre company Graeae - places Quasimodo's deafness at the centre of his existence, as emphasised by the character's dialogue with himself as he tries to understand the chaos around him. David Bower (best known for playing Hugh Grant's younger brother in Four Weddings anda Funeral) brings a vivid authenticity to his role as the tortured but noble hunchback who battles heroically to save beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda (Candis Nergaard) from danger. Notably, this is the first time in a broadcast piece that Quasimodo has been played by a deaf actor.

-- Jeremy Aspinall

1/2 Quasimodo, the deformed bell ringer, hides away in the bell tower of Notre Dame Cathedral, friendless and ashamed of his appearance. When the bewitching gypsy Esmeralda arrives in Paris, Quasimodo falls in love with her from afar.

BBC Radio 3 Drama - Lewis Carroll - The Hunting Of The Snark [Snuffbox]

The Hunting of The Snark
'An Agony in Eight Fits' by Lewis Carroll.

A surreal odyssey in which a bizarre group of characters set off in search of the elusive and mysterious Snark.

They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care;
They pursued it with forks and hope;
They threatened its life with a railway share;
They charmed it with smiles and soap ...

Ever since Lewis Carroll's nonsense epic appeared in 1876, readers have joined his ten-man Snark-hunting crew and pursued the search with great enthusiasm. What are they hunting for? What is the Snark? Numerous theories have been proposed. Carroll himself provides a helpful preface to the poem and is recorded as having explained to one reader: 'In answer to your question, 'What did you mean the Snark was?' will you tell your friend that I meant that the Snark was a Boojum. I trust that she and you will now feel quite satisfied and happy'.

Tom Brown's Schooldays - BBC Radio Full Cast Drama - cheops

Tom Brown's Schooldays - BBC Radio Full Cast Drama - cheops

By Thomas Hughes, dramatised by Joe Dunlop.

A classic of Victorian literature, and one of the earliest books written specifically for boys, Tom Brown's Schooldays has long had an influence well beyond the middle-class, public school world that it describes. An active social reformer, Hughes wrote with a freshness, a lack of cant, and a kind, relaxed tolerance which keeps this novel refreshingly distinct from other schoolboy adventures.

BBC Radio 4 Drama Serial - Victor Hugo - Les Misérables

Les Misérables

Victor Hugo's epic novel dramatised in 25 parts by Sebastian Baczkiewicz and Lin Coghlan.

‘He was no longer Jean Valjean, but No. 24601’

Victor Hugo’s tale of injustice, heroism and love follows the fortunes of Jean Valjean, an escaped convict determined to put his criminal past behind him. But his attempts to become a respected member of the community are constantly put under threat: by his own conscience, when, owing to a case of mistaken identity, another man is arrested in his place; and by the relentless investigations of the dogged policeman Javert. It is not simply for himself that Valjean must stay free, however, for he has sworn to protect the baby daughter of Fantine, driven to prostitution by poverty. A compelling and compassionate view of the victims of early nineteenth-century French society, Les Misérables is a novel on an epic scale, moving inexorably from the eve of the battle of Waterloo to the July Revolution of 1830.

BBC Radio 4 Drama - The Ladykillers [upgrade] [Snuffbox]

The Ladykillers
Dramatisation by Bruce Bedford of the Ealing comedy The Ladykillers screenplay by William Rose.

As the Boccherini minuet tinkled out, Mrs Wilberforce suffered a sweet, sad spasm of nostalgia. Her father, she said, had engaged a string quartet for her 21st birthday party, and, as they played that very tune, news came that the old Queen had died, and the party broke up. "All that time ago," she sighed, "in Pangbourne."

For some of us, the Boccherini will always mean The Ladykillers (R4), the best of the Ealing comedies. Adapted by Bruce Bedford for the 'Cinema 100' season, it lost nothing in translation to radio.

The story is all bizarre logic and gentle humour: Mrs Wilberforce, old and widowed, has settled in the doubtful purlieus of King's Cross with her parrot, General Gordon. Unwittingly, she helps a gang of thieves to rob a van: when she realises what they've done, she insists that they own up. In their increasingly desperate attempts to bump her off they all perish, and she is left explaining to a sceptical policeman that she possesses pounds 60,000 of someone else's money, handily concealed in a cello case. Indulgently, he tells her to toddle off and spend it; in a moment of sublime recklessness, she decides to abandon her nasty old umbrella.

The desperadoes were led by an urbane Edward Petherbridge as the Professor, while Mrs W herself was the utterly delightful Margot Boyd (whose day-job, as Marjorie Antrobus, is keeping members of The Archers in order). Her unfailing trust in the good nature of the villains leads to an enchanting scene when they find themselves attending a tea party for her friends Lettice and Constance. "You pedal the pianola beautifully, Professor," she coos, as the parrot, played with cackling gusto by Johnny Morris, squawks malevolently: "Swab the decks! Man the guns!" [The Independent]

Trivia : Brian Perkins announces the author of the original screenplay as Edward Rose ... tut-tut, lax standards at Auntie.

Approx 90 minutes. Broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 13 January 1996. Recorded from BBC 7 in 2008.

Mrs. Wilberforce : Margot Boyd

A Thousand Splendid Suns - by Khaled Hosseini - BBC Radio Audiobook

A Thousand Splendid Suns - by Khaled Hosseini - BBC Radio Audiobook - cheops

Khaled Hosseini's eagerly awaited second novel read by Seeta Indrani.

Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith and the salvation to be found in love.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them - in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul - they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival. A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship and an indestructible love.

Ten episodes of approximately fifteen minutes each - episode summaries witheld to avoid spoiling the plot.

About the Author:
Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan and moved to the United States in 1980. His first novel, The Kite Runner, was an international bestseller, published in 34 countries. In 2006 he received the Humanitarian Award from the United Nations Refugee Agency and was named a U.S. goodwill envoy to that agency.

The novel by Khaled Hosseini - read by Kulvinder Ghir.

The Kite Runner of Khaled Hosseini's deeply moving fiction debut is an illiterate Afghan boy with an uncanny instinct for predicting exactly where a downed kite will land. Growing up in the city of Kabul in the early 1970s, Hassan was narrator Amir's closest friend even though the loyal 11-year-old with "a face like a Chinese doll" was the son of Amir's father's servant and a member of Afghanistan's despised Hazara minority. But in 1975, on the day of Kabul's annual kite-fighting tournament, something unspeakable happened between the two boys.

Narrated by Amir, a 40-year-old novelist living in California, The Kite Runner tells the gripping story of a boyhood friendship destroyed by jealousy, fear, and the kind of ruthless evil that transcends mere politics. Running parallel to this personal narrative of loss and redemption is the story of modern Afghanistan and of Amir's equally guilt-ridden relationship with the war-torn city of his birth. The first Afghan novel to be written in English, The Kite Runner begins in the final days of King Zahir Shah's 40-year reign and traces the country's fall from a secluded oasis to a tank-strewn battlefield controlled by the Russians and then the trigger-happy Taliban.

Ten episodes of approximately fifteen minutes each.

'Hosseini's ability to reach the core of experiences of love and loss places him in the company of such fine chroniclers of the new America as Chang-rae Lee. The Kite Runner is a first novel of unusual generosity, honesty and compassion' ( The Independent )

'The shattering first novel by Khaled Hosseini a rich and soul-searching narrative a sharp, unforgettable taste of the trauma and tumult experienced by Afghanis as their country buckled' ( The Observer )

'A devastating, masterful and painfully honest story it is a novel of great hidden intricacy and wisdom, like a timeless Eastern tale. It speaks the most harrowing truth about the power of evil' ( The Daily Telegraph )

About the Author:
The son of an Afghan diplomat whose family received political asylum in the United States in 1980, Hosseini combines the unflinching realism of a war correspondent with the satisfying emotional pull of master storytellers such as Rohinton Mistry. Like the kite that is its central image, the story line of this mesmerizing first novel occasionally dips and seems almost to dive to the ground. But Hosseini ultimately keeps everything airborne until his heartrending conclusion in an American picnic park.

BBC R4 - Charles Dickens - Barnaby Rudge

Description:
Barnaby Rudge by Charles Dickens adapted for the radio in 3 parts.
Eps. 1 - 3, S.W., 1 - 5/10/95, each 57'15"

Charles Dickens's first historical novel set during the anti-Catholic riots of 1780 is an unparalleled portrayal of the terror of a rampaging mob, seen through the eyes of the individuals swept up in the chaos.

Those individuals include Emma, a Catholic, and Edward, a Protestant, whose forbidden love weaves through the heart of the story; and the simpleminded Barnaby, one of the riot leaders, whose fate is tied to a mysterious murder and whose beloved pet raven, Grip, embodies the mystical power of innocence. The story encompasses both the rarified aristocratic world and the volatile streets and nightmarish underbelly of London, which Dickens characteristically portrays in vivid, pulsating detail. But the real focus of the book is on the riots themselves, depicted with an extraordinary energy and redolent of the dangers, the mindlessness, and the possibilities both beneficial and brutality of the mob.
Complete with stirring music and sound effects, Barnaby Rudge contains all the charm of a radio broadcast, and all the excitement of a theater performance.

One of the lesser-known novels, Barnaby Rudge is nonetheless among the most brilliant and most terrifyingin Dickens's oeuvre.
